2024 Thrianta National Show Summary
The 2024 Thrianta National Show took place in Stillwater, Minnesota on May 18th. So much hard work and planning went into the weekend, and I could not be prouder of the Driftless Area Thrianta Breeders Association for putting on our first national show just one year into becoming an official club. Wisconsin and Minnesota have some of the most passionate Thrianta breeders I have seen in my time, and I am so happy that we were able to bring the show to the area and give them the opportunity to meet more fellow Thrianta breeders!
The showroom opened on Friday afternoon for exhibitors to begin filling the showroom and checking in. It is always such an exciting feeling as fellow breeders and friends who we only get to see twice a year arrive! The Rabbit and Cavy Breeders Anonymous club was generous enough to put together large coops for the national show that had wire bottoms. This year, we had a record-breaking amount of youth exhibitors, totaling nine! All youth were given a gift bag at check-in which included games, snacks, candy, custom cups (made by Ann Steinhaus), and various other goodies.
The Driftless Area Thrianta Breeders Association hosted a dinner in the showroom on Friday night before the specialty show began. The club provided subs, and club members were generous enough to provide sides, drinks, and desserts. Thank you to all the DATBA club members who helped put this dinner together! DATBA’s Spring Specialty Show began shortly after the social, with Tiffany Wayne judging both the open and youth shows. For a Friday evening show, we had a great turnout with 60 Thriantas shown! Congratulations to the following winners of the specialty show: Donovan Lundquist (BOB Youth), Marcella Clingerman (BOS Youth), and Laurie & Angela Penterman (BOB & BOS Open)! The shows concluded with plenty of time to get settled in and get a good night of sleep before the national show.
Saturday morning was kicked off with the much-anticipated National Show before moving on the all-breed shows. We were so honored to have the incredible Briony Smith judging our national show this year! Her depth of knowledge, gentleness with the animals, and precision is unlike any other, and she is such a joy to watch judge! Youth showed first followed by Open. You can find the complete results in the newsletter and online, but here are your top winners from the National Show: Donovan Lundquist (BOB Youth), Kylee Hoffman (BOS Youth), Donovan Lundquist (Best Fur Youth), Laurie & Angela Penterman (BOB Open), Hunter Potter (BOS Open), and Krista Spencer (Best Fur Open)!
Besides the show, there were several other great things going on in the showroom. DATBA had juice, lemonade, and champagne for mimosas available the morning of for exhibitors to enjoy. Nationals is a vacation after all, right?! DATBA also had a raffle table that was so big, we had to get two extra tables! Thank you to everyone who generously donated and thank you to the Potters and my fiancé Austin for running the table, selling tickets, and pulling winners! The cherry on top of it all was the beautiful photobooth that Jennifer Potter created. The bright blue and fun accessories looked so good with the Thriantas!
That evening, the banquet for the National Show was held at a local brewery in Stillwater called River Siren Brewing. It is a gorgeous place downtown on the waterfront! We had our own area in an upstairs space that accommodated our party well. We began with an hour of social time as people were arriving. During this time, adults were free to try out the beer at the brewery and I brought several games that were a hit with both kids and adults alike. We even had a hockey arcade game in our party space that the kids (and kids at heart) had a great time with! All exhibitors and banquet attendees also received a custom Nationals magnet for attending at this time. For dinner, we enjoyed Mexican food from a fantastic local restaurant, Acapulco Mexican Restaurant. Quite honestly, this was one of my favorite parts of the weekend because the food was so good!
After dinner, we moved onto introductions and ATRBA business. We also recognized the dozens of donors who helped make the National Show a success, as well as all the people who helped run the show. Awards from the National Show were handed out next. Personally, I had so much fun carefully choosing prizes that were suitable for open and youth that were both useful and fun. National sweepstakes awards were also handed out for those who were in attendance. We ended the evening by giving away ten door prizes through trivia, a crossword puzzle, and word search. My dear friend Ann Wimann made beautiful glass pieces of several varieties with our DATBA logo on them. Instead of doing random drawings for these prizes, you had to “earn them” by answering Thrianta trivia questions! It seems like everyone had a great time with this part of the banquet and hopefully learned something new about Thriantas!
I sincerely hope that everyone who attended had a fantastic weekend meeting new Thrianta breeders, celebrating hard work, and enjoying what we all love together. I have wanted to bring the National Show to our area for a long time now, and it has been no easy task. It takes a tremendous amount of hard work to put on a show at this level. I also wanted to make the weekend a full experience for everyone with lots of hospitality, which I think was accomplished. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who helped make the weekend a success, and I hope that more breeders will make the trip to attend the next time that the Driftless Area Thrianta Breeders Association puts on a National Show again down the road!
